Whiting Turner Contracting Company needed a turnkey supplier for a unique security gate application at the new addition to the Dayton Mall. They needed a company that could design, build and install large powered gates when appearance as well as function was important. They were referred to Stewart Iron Works.

The retail expansion at the Mall was designed for the convenience of shoppers, so the required service areas located at the rear of the new retail buildings would be facing the entrance roads into the shopping area.

The project architects, FRCH Design Worldwide, changed the appearance of the service areas by using walls and security gates that blended with the modern retail construction and enhanced the visual effect of the mall entrances. The security gates, both swinging and sliding designs, would need to be over ten feet high, could weigh over 3,000 lbs and would need to blend visual appeal with function. The architects also specified that environmentally friendly materials were to be used for the facings of the gates.

The architects, engineers and designers at Stewart Iron Works were able to deliver gates that achieved all of the desired design criteria, met all building codes and structural requirements and made extensive use of recycled composite materials.

The Dayton Mall gates are an excellent example of Stewart Iron Works' contemporary design and engineering capabilities.
